What does "EMS" stand for?
Emergency Medical Services. It is a network of resources linked together with the purpose of providing emergency care and transport to victims of sudden illness and injury.

What dos the EMS logo represent?
Each arm of the logo represents:                                
1. Early detection                                                 
2. Early reporting
3. Early response
4. On-scene care                                                       
5. Care in transit
6. Transfer to advance medical care.

What does MFR mean?
Medical First Responder. The first person on the scene of an incident with emergency medical care skills, typically trained to the most basic EMS level.

What is an emergency?
A critical state in which the life of an individual is under immediate threat. For example, fractures, seizures, excessive bleeding, difficulty breathing amongst others. EMS does not deal with minor injuries and conditions like cuts, bruises and low-grade fever.

What happens when I call EMS?

  • Your call will be answered by our EMS call dispatcher
  • You will be asked to provide the location and type of the incident and the number of victims.
  • A MFR will respond to the emergency.

Do I have to go to the hospital if I call for EMS?
No. It depends on the severity of the injury.

Are my problems confidential?
Yes, all patient information is kept confidential.

Is there a fee associated with the service that EMS provides?
All emergency care will be provided free of cost. Hospital fees will be incurred by the patient. All students, faculty and staff members are requested to keep their medical insurances handy.

How do I get involved with EMS?

  • Register for our MFR training course
  • Apply for an emergency medical dispatcher

Are EMS personnel paid for their services?
No. LUMS EMS is a student-volunteer based service. However, financial aid students are compensated for their work hours.

How is EMS staffed?
LUMS EMS is administered by the head of department, director operations, director administration, crew chiefs and manager administration. Volunteers are selected on the basis of interviews.

How many EMS personnel are on duty at any time?
At least two MFR’s are on-call at all times.

What is the difference between LUMS EMS and other EMS agencies?
LUMS EMS is the first of its kind in Pakistan. We hope to promote this idea in other universities of Pakistan.

How is EMS funded?
LUMS EMS is a part of the administration of LUMS and has its full support. Donations are welcomed and we are willing to allow for sponsors.
